Important victory for Clonmel boxer

Con Sheehan won the gold medal at super heavyweight at the Olympic test event at the excel arena in London last weekend. It was Con’s first gold medal since moving up to super heavyweight and the four continents were represented at the prestigious multi nations. Con beat the highly rated Mohammod Arjaoui of Morocco 11 - 7 in the semi final. The Moroccan beat the Russian world no.1 at the recent world championships. In the final Con beat Evgenios Lazardis of Greece 16 points to 4. The invitational tournament was a dress rehearsal for the 2012 Olympic games and Con was presented with his gold medal by AIBA world president Dr. Ching - Kuo Wu. Although this gold medal will not qualify Con for the London Olympic games, it will give him great confidence as he goes forward for the final qualifier’s in Istanbul in April.

Con has been very busy in the the last few weeks having signed his first World series of boxing contract with German team Leipzig Leopards and making his debut against Mexico city with a great win two weeks ago. He recorded a comfortable points decision against Mario Heredia of Mexico city. The World series of boxing is run by the World amateur boxing association, boxers compete over five two minute rounds and wear no headgear or vest, very much like professional boxing but the boxers retain their amateur status. Con will have several fixtures over the coming months with the German team.
