New Mooreabbey Athletic Club enjoying rapid success

The Mooreabbey Milers are Tipperary’s newest athletics club based in the parish of Galbally and Aherlow in the Glen of Aherlow.

The club held their first event on December 31, 2011, which was a mile race from the village of Galbally to the monument known as the Mooreabbey. It was a fantastic event for all the family on New Year’s Eve with mulled wine and mince pies for everyone afterwards. There were many competitive runners as well as fun runners and walkers, so they have decided to make it an annual event. Make sure to mark it on your calendar for December 31, 2012 at 1pm.

For this year, the course has been accurately ‘Jones counter measured’ and the club have obtained an AAI permit. This could be a great way to test your mile distance and to monitor you’re improvement every year.

The club train under the guidance of Tom Blackburn on Tuesdays and Thursdays in rain, hail, sleet or snow at 7pm and have seen their numbers greatly increase over the year. A great favourite with many of their members is their Sunday morning jog on the hills and roads surrounding the beautiful Glen of Aherlow. Also over the last number of weeks the club have put on a ‘Juvenile cross country training’ from 6pm to 7pm for the kids and this has been very successful thanks to all the coaches.

PRO Ann Coughlan spoke about the success of the club, “The club’s success is greatly due to its vibrant and enthusiastic members and a very active committee. They have competed in many events over the year in all the distances 10k, 10miles, half marathon, and marathon, even mountain running where some of their members have competed in the world championships and brought home medals,” said Ann.

During the local festival in August the club successfully ran an 8k-road race on a really nice course and intend to make it an annual event.

The Club had good success at the County and Munster cross-country championships. The juveniles were well placed in the first ten and the ladies and men’s teams had podium success.

There will be a talk and demonstrations at the Community Centre in Galbally on Friday, November 9 at 7pm by Liam Butler, who is one of the top Triathlon competitors in Ireland giving insight and advise on triathlon training and competition.

On Friday, November 23 at 7pm Brian Flannelly, a member of Cork Orienteering and an avid competitor will a talk on and introduction to orienteering and map reading.

All the above talks are open to the public and all other clubs GAA, Rugby, Soccer etc. who would be interested in the subjects that are being discussed. There will be a small fee of €5 per person payable at the door.

The Mooreabbey Milers would like to thank all those that supported their endeavors in 2012 and would like to wish their members continued success.
