Tipp’s Abbey CBS do well at Rockwell blitz

On Tuesday May 21st the Abbey C.B.S sent three teams to Rockwell College to compete in the most prestigious County Tipperary U14 schools football competition. Rockwell College’s facilities made this competition even better with their six pitches and the beautiful weather added to the excitement of the competition. The Abbey were hoping to record a second successive win in this competition.

The Abbey A were put in a group with Rockwell A, Comeragh College and Borrisoleigh. The Abbey overcame Rockwell in the first match which was a very tight game in the first half but the Abbey pulled away in the second half. The Abbey then recorded wins over Commeragh College and Borrisoleigh and topped their group.

The Abbey then drew Carrick C.B.S in the quarter final, which was a very tight encounter. The Carrick side were very tough and really up for the game. The Abbey overcame the tough opposition of Carrick to win 3-3 to 0-3. The Abbey then met Cashel in the semi-final, who looked to be a very strong team from the throw-in. The Abbey put in a marvellous performance with Stephen O’Brien, Conor O’Dwyer and Shane Ryan outstanding. The finishing score was 7-5 to 3-4.

The Abbey progressed to the final where they met Rockwell A. The match was played on pitch three and it was an advantage for Rockwell playing on their home ground and having a home crowd cheering them on.

The Abbey made a brilliant start to this final with goals from Shane Ryan, who was captain for the final. The half back line of Stephen O’Brien and Matthew Moroney left no ball past them. The half-time score was 5-3 to 1-0 in favour of the Abbey. In the second half the Rockwell crowd got their team going and they scored two goals and looked like coming back into the game but with the teamwork of Stephen O’Brien and Shane Ryan the Abbey rallied up a full-time score of 7-4 to 3-2.

The Abbety B team qualified for the A cup and lost in the quarter-final to a strong Thurles C.B.S A team. The C team lost narrowly in the semi-final of the C cup to St.Ailbes A.
