Dr. Pádraig Ó Cearbhaill, Senior Placenames Officer in the Department of Arts Heritage and the Gaeltacht and author of three books on Tipperary placenames alone, will give an in depth account of the placenames of Tipperary in the January lecture from the Tipperary People and Places series on January 17 in Tipperary Studies, The Source, Cathedral Street, Thurles at 7.30pm. All are welcome.

County Tipperary contains 3,233 townlands. Their origins stem from a variety of uses; land usage, ownership, religion, topography, defence and family names. As an example, the settlement term ‘Baile’ forms the initial element of 440 townlands.
