Urgent maintenance works have closed Cahir Castle to visitors for up to four months.
The Castle was closed to the public last week and a sign on the gate explained this was for “urgent maintenance.”
The ancient fortress was also closed for one day last week as a result of flooding, the OPW confirmed to The Nationalist, although there were no details forthcoming on how the flood waters had breached the castle defences. A spokesperson for the Office of Public Works confirmed to The Nationalist that the flooding had closed the castle.
They also confirmed that urgent maintenance works are currently being carried out at the castle. For the safety of the public the castle will be closed until these works are completed. The sign on the gate says the castle will be closed until January 31. However the OPW told The Nationalist it is hoped the work will be completed and the castle reopen by the end of February but the closure could stretch in to the middle of March. It is believed the work is being carried out in the great hall, however the OPW spokesperson did not go into the details of the project.
