Due to the Success of the Children’s Summer Book Bus in 2010, it is on the road again this year.

In an effort to outreach library services to more rural communities, the Children’s Summer Book Bus is on the road again. The Book Bus will bring a wide variety of quality books to children in parts of Tipperary that do not have a library nearby.

The Book Bus is for Children aged up to 14 and is completely FREE. Children can borrow four books per visit and can join the Summer Reading Tree. Last year over 300 children joined the Book Bus and read over 5800 books! Children and parents were delighted with the service.

“The Children’s Summer Book Bus is a free and flexible source of entertainment for children during the summer. They can join the reading tree programme, read as many books over the summer as they like, they can pick their own books each week from a range of fiction and non-fiction. The children love coming onto the bus and putting their leaves on the Reading Tree and parents love to see their kids keep their reading skills up during the summer”, said Emer O’Brien, Senior Executive Librarian, Tipperary Libraries

The Summer Reading Tree is a very successful reading programme that encourages children to read during the summer months, thus making their transition back to school in September easier. For every book they read they get a leaf which is added to the Reading Tree in the library or Book Bus.

The tree ‘grows’ over the summer and when children have read enough books and completed their reading tree form, it is stamped and they will be invited to the Summer Reading Tree parties in the various public libraries in Tipperary in September. They will receive a Reading Tree Medal and Certificate and have great fun in the library.

The Children’s Summer Book Bus starts on July 5 and with continue until August 23. The Bus visits 3 locations across the county including: Tuesdays, Clogheen (10.30 – 12.30) and Mullinahone (2.30 – 4.30).
