Tipperary Mid West Community Radio has produced a six-part radio drama series based on key events in 19th century Tipperary history.

The series was produced with funding support from the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland under the Sound and Vision Scheme in what is a unique event for a local community radio station in Ireland.

Written and directed by Annacarty playwright, Paul Maher, who has recently brought Moll by John B. Keane to Donohill and the Marian Hall, the series, called ‘Tipperary Up and At It’, is produced by Jim Keane and edited by Breda Ryan.

Each of the six episodes dramatises how the big events of 19th century Ireland were experienced here in Tipperary - events such as the famine, the Fenians, the election of 1872, the Ballycohey evictions of 1868, and the 1848 rebellion in Mullinahone.

It also touches on aspects of social history, for example, faction fights, the power of the hedge schoolmaster, wake games, and Daniel O’Connell’s visit to Cashel in 1843.

A total of 57 actors were involved in the making of the six programmes and taking part were many well known local actors from local drama groups, such as Aherlow Players, Aisteori Dun na Scaith, Emly Players, Dreamtime Theatre Group, as well as Youth Theatre groups in Tipperary (Stagecraft YT) and East Limerick (County Limerick YT (based at The Honeyfitz in Lough Gur).

The series will be will be broadcast on Tipp Mid West Radio on Tuesday, Wednesday & Thursday March 19,20 and 21 at 11.05am each day. For further information contact Paul Maher: 087 4135228.
