Violinist Catherine Leonard and pianist Hugh Tinney will visit Clonmel on Wednesday, October 17 for a concert in Old St. Mary’s Church at 8.00pm
Their programme artfully combines two Beethoven sonatas (No.6 and the “Kreutzer” Sonata) with Westport born Raymond Deane’s “Parthenia Violata” and Ravel’s Sonata in G major.
The well-known “Kreutzer Sonata” inspired Tolstoy’s famous novella and also Janácek’s string quartet with the same name. The late Ravel work with its ragtime figure and blues movement is great fun; Gerschwin wrote his “Rhapsody in Blue” after he heard Ravel play this work.
Of their performance of the Beethoven and Ravel sonatas at the recent West Cork Chamber Music Festival the Irish Times said - “Also totally absorbing were the performances of Beethoven and Ravel by violinist Catherine Leonard and pianist Hugh Tinney. The music just flowed from their fingers like a force of nature, as it if couldn’t have been shaped or projected in any superior way. The Duo have an affinity for Beethoven’s works for violin and piano and are performing the composers 10 sonatas over a three year period. They recorded a CD of works by Beethoven on the Lyric FM label in 2007. Catherine Leonard and Hugh Tinney, two of Ireland’s foremost musicians with highly successful solo careers in Ireland and internationally, have performed as a duo since 2000. As well as participating in many festivals, they have toured in Ireland, Finland and Sweden and in 2010, they performed to great acclaim on a Camerata Pacifica tour of Los Angeles and the U.S. West Coast.
“Empathetic, collective poise and personality were evident here…” (Santa Barbara News Press).
A highly regarded soloist in Ireland and throughout Europe, Catherine Leonard is Principal Artist for the California-based chamber ensemble, Camerata Pacifica. Hugh Tinney is one of Ireland’s most distinguished and best loved pianists; he has preformed in over 30 countries worldwide since winning first prize in piano competitions, the 1983 Pozzoli in Italy and the 1984 Paloma O’Shea in Spain. The Duo will perform all the Beethoven sonatas in a series in the National Concert Hall in early 2014, which will be followed by a recital in Wigmore Hall, London.
