Mikaela Coffey, aged 14 from Glenview Square, Tipperary town is one of the finalists of Teen Idol representing Tipperary alongside five other finalists.
The Teen Idol All Ireland final takes place on November 27, in the Red Cow, with a grand prize of €10,000 euro and the title of being the All Ireland winner of Teen Idol 2011.
Mikaela, who loves music singing and playing her guitar, is the granddaughter of Rita and Billy Sloane of Sloanes shop and pub on Henry Street. Her mother, Marguerite worked in Mary Hannah’s restaurant for 8 years and currently works in Byrnes Spar in the centre of Town.
A second year student in St. Anne’s Secondary School, Mikaela has been working hard to hone her craft auditioning and entering other competitions for a number of years. She was a finalist in Tipp’s Got Talent two years in a row, 2010/2011 at just 13 and 14 years old. “It was great and I put a lot of work into the two years and I was proud of my achievement,” said Mikaela. In 2009 she went to Glasgow to audition for Britain’s Got Talent. “I performed well and it was really exciting. I didn’t get on the telly auditions but I did get to meet the ITV1 production team and I auditioned for the producer. It didn’t feel real that I was accepted to audition for the show and I loved every second of it.” Also in 2009 Mikaela was awarded a Distinction in Cashel’s Bru Bru singing competition for classical singers with the song, ‘I Don’t’ Know How To Love Him’ and the same year, in 5th class, she won the part of Nancy, in St Joseph’s School Production.
In 2010 she sang in St. Mary’s Church, Tipperary Town when Francis Black was the special guest for Mental Health Week and in May 2011 she got to sing with the Band Royseven when they visited St Ailbe’s School to give a talk to students about what it was like in the music industry.
So who is Mikaela’s idol or inspiration? “My idol is Gerard Way from the band ‘My Chemical Romance’, because he followed his dreams and went through a lot when his band became successful. I really love this band because their lyrics mean so much and speak the truth about life. They are my favourite band in the world and I will always love them.” said Mikaela.
Singing is Mikaela’s life and at such a young age and with such determination and courage to take every opportunity within her grasp, we can only admire her honesty, drive and integrity to do what she loves to do.
“When I sing in front of people I feel at home and although I do sometimes get nervous I love showing people that I have a dream and letting them know I work so hard to try and achieve that. I hope that I will always be performing but not as a part time thing but a full time thing. I really love music and singing and since a young age I’d get my family to dress me up so I could perform songs to them. I never thought my dream would become this serious and now I know that this is my dream, my life, I really want to achieve what I can no matter what it takes because this is what I really, really want to do.”
Best of luck Mikaela in the finals of Teen Idol 2011 taking place this weekend in the Red Cow.
