An Irish lyricist, a Romanian virtuoso and a string quintet band – what happens when these musical forces collide?
March 2013 sees renowned songwriter and cellist Vyvienne Long embark on a nationwide tour with the critically acclaimed Balanescu Quartet for their first ever Irish performances together. Vyvienne has composed original material and arranged her songs for the newly formed string quintet.
She plays at the Holy Trinity Church of Ireland, Fethard, on Thursday, March 28.
Doors 7.30pm and show starts promptly at 8pm, tickets, €15/18
Booking at McCarthy’s Fethard, 086 8119625
Vyvienne released her critically acclaimed debut album Caterpillar Sarabande in 2010. Her beautifully disarming and intensely personal songs have been in demand for soundtracks in Ireland and internationally since, including Kirsten Sheridan’s “Dollhouse”, the Icelandic documentary “The Future Of Hope” and RTE’s drama series “RAW”. Admired as a compelling vocalist and songwriter of incisive wit, critics have drawn comparisons with Björk, Tori Amos and Joanna Newsome.
“Vyvienne Long has been known for some time as a boundlessly talented cellist and arranger … she displays all her talent, confidence and humour to fabulous effect...” (Ian Melaney, State)
The avante-garde Balanescu Quartet has acquired a reputation as one of the leading contemporary music groups in the world today. Its guiding force, the Romanian virtuoso violinist Alexander Balanescu, has led the quartet in collaborations with composers such as Michael Nyman and Gavin Bryars, and in projects with Lounge Lizard John Lurie, Jack de Johnette, Ornette Coleman, David Byrne, the Pet Shop Boys, Spiritualized, Kate Bush and Kraftwerk. The Balanescu Quartet has developed its own unique performing style setting them apart from any other string quartet. Their live performances are notable for their sheer energy and dynamism. www.balanescu.com
Both Vyvienne and The Balanescu Quartet have toured the world extensively, and both have opened shows at the Wembley Arena to 10,000 pairs of ears. Vyvienne can be seen on YouTube or heard on myspace.
