The 50th Consecutive Roscrea Conference will take place from April 13th – April 15th next. The theme of the conference will be “From Citeaux to Roscrea and Celebrating fifty conferences at Roscrea” and once again the conference will take place at Mount St. Joseph Abbey, Roscrea.
The event regularly attracts a world wide audience and tremendous praise must be given to local historian and lecturer George Cunningham whose tireless efforts have helped ensure that the conference continues to go from strength to strength as each year passes by.
The Conference Fee represents incredible value at just €60 and (includes receptions, all lectures, coffee/tea). Full time students and unemployed €30. Part attendance is possible and local people from the Roscrea and surrounding areas are especially welcome.
The conference will commence at 6.45pm on April 13th with a reception hosted by Roscrea Heritage Society. The first speaker at this year’s spring conference will be Dom Eamon Fitzgerald, ocso, Abbot General of the Cistercian Order and the topic for his talk will be “The Cistercian World Today”. This will be followed by Dom Richard Purcell whose topic will be “The Region of the Isles”. Dr Pádraig Hogan, Education Dept., NUIM will present “Are we there yet? From Citeaux to Roscrea and beyond”. Dr John Feehan, author, botanist, geologist
Will conclude the first day of the conference with his topic entitled “A Cistercian colophon”
Delegates to the conference are invited to participate in an early morning walk on the landscape of Mt St with John Feehan at 7.30am on Saturday, April 14th. The first talk of the day will be delivered by Pádraig Hogan entitled “Spirituality of Bernard of Clairvaux”. Dr Colmán Ó Clabaigh, osb, Glenstal Abbey will then speak about “he Cistercians in Medieval Ireland: a Benedictine perspective” and then Dr Ben Hazard, Mícheál Ó Cléirigh Institute, UCD will deliver his talk entitled Fr Luke Wadding OFM and his Cistercian contacts in Italy and Ireland, c1618- c1657. The Cistercians return to Ireland – early days at Mount Melleray will be delivered by An tAthair Uinseann Ó Maidín, ocso, archivist,Mt Melleray and Dom Richard Purcell, ocso, and Dom Laurence Walsh, Ocso will both give a presentation talk on The Story of Mount St Joseph, Roscrea - Part 1. Sr Lily Scullion, ocso, Farm Manager, Glencairn Abbey will bring the morning to a close with her talk entitled “Cistercian Nuns of the Isles”.
