Moyne Drama Group are one of nine plays to qualify for the All Ireland Confined Drama Finals to be held in Rossmore, Co. Cork during the week of Apr 19th – 27th, this in their first serious foray onto the festival circuit.
Founded in 1978, the group have a long tradition of staging Tops of the Towns, pantomimes and in the last number of years, highly successful plays, but chose, this year, to seriously challenge the festival circuit with the John B. Keane classic “Sive” directed by Susan Troy, in her festival debut. In this regard, they began their audition process back in June 2012 and commenced rehearsals in September 2012, giving them ample time to “create and embody their characters”, a point which was remarked upon by many of the adjudicators they met over the past four weeks.
The group finished first in the Mountmellick Drama festival picking up awards for Best Play, Best Director, Best Actor (John Quinlan) and Best Set. They finished second in the Kildare Drama Festival picking up awards for Best Play, Best Director, Best Supporting Actor (Tommy Kennedy), Adjudicators Cert of Merit (Michelle Maher King) and nominations for Johnny Fogarty (Best Actor), Geraldine Delaney (Best Actress) and Maureen Claffey (Best Supporting Actress). The group was also presented with a week’s theatre workshop at the Drama League of Ireland in Limerick.
Most recently, they conquered Tipperary by winning the Confined Section at the Holycross Drama Festival and picking up the Tipperary Star Cup for Best Play, Best Director, Best Actress (Geraldine Delaney) and Best Supporting Actor (John Quinlan). They now had the coveted two wins and a second place finish necessary for qualification for the All Ireland Finals, an incredible achievement for a group on their first festival journey.
Along the way, the group picked up many other awards including Best Actress in South Wicklow (Geraldine Delaney), Best Supporting Actress South Wicklow (Maureen Claffey), Best Set (North Cork) and a nomination for Eamon Clohessey (Best Supporting Actor) together with four third place finishes at their remaining festivals.
They now await the Confined Finals Draw to be held in Rossmore over the Easter Weekend to determine what date they will perform at the All Ireland Finals.
The cast of Sive comprises: Maureen Claffey(Nanna), Geraldine Delaney(Mena Glavin), Johnny Fogarty(Mike Glavin), Edel Delaney (Sive), John Quinlan(Thomasheen Sean Rua), Tommy Kennedy(Sean Dota), Eamon Clohessy(Liam Scuab), Liam Troy(Pats Bocock) and Michelle Maher King (Carthalawn). The group intend to stage “Sive” again prior to their All-Ireland performance and a date and venue for this performance will be advertised in the coming weeks.
