A young Palestinian freedom fighter discovers the true cost of becoming involved in political violence and what it does to one’s humanity in Hany Abu-Assad’s absorbing drama ‘Omar’.

Set in the West Bank, the story centres on Omar (Adam Bakri), a shy sensitive young man who regularly sneaks back and forth over the separation wall in order to visit his secret love Nadia despite the presence of Israeli forces on patrol. After being caught and roughed up by the Israelis while climbing over the wall one day, Omar decides to join his friends Amjad and Tarek in plotting to kill an Israeli soldier. When they eventually carry out their execution, Omar is swiftly arrested by the Israelis and under interrogation by Intelligence officer Rami (Waleed Zuaiter), is forced to become an informant. Omar’s early release signals to his friends that he has made a deal with the enemy, making him a figure of suspicion and betrayal which ultimately threatens everything he holds dear.

‘Omar’ will be screened at The Source Arts Centre in Thurles on Wednesday, October 15th at 8pm.

Tickets are priced at €9 (€7 concession and €5 for Film Club members).
