Clonmel World Music proudly presents US band Birds Of Chicago in the Raheen House Hotel in Clonmel on Thursday, May 8th.
Birds of Chicago, is a collective based around JT Nero and Allison Russell. It was formed in 2012 and its founder members are no strangers to Clonmel World Music. Allison Russell has played Clonmel World Music more than any other musician, visiting Clonmel three times with Po Girl, and once already with Birds Of Chicago.
JT Nero played with Po Girl on tour in 2010 and also with Birds Of Chicago last year.
Whether touring as a duo or with the full band, Nero and Russell have emerged as two of the most compelling new voices in North American Roots music. Allison Russell is an absolutely beautiful singer and plays clarinet, banjo, ukulele, guitar. JT Nero sings and plays guitar and percussion. Allison and JT are joined on the Irish leg of the tour by Joe Faulhaber (acoustic/electric guitars) and Will Waghorn.
For several years Russell and Nero’s respective bands, Po’ Girl (Vancouver, BC) and JT and the Clouds (Chicago, IL), have collaborated extensively, but on 2011’s Mountains/Forests, released under the JT Nero banner, they tapped into the true, bewitching power of their voices together on an entire record.
The record received critical raves and won them new fans on both side of the Atlantic, and created a great deal of excitement for the first official Birds of Chicago album, released in 2012. The album got a lot of Airplay all over Europe and has been featured on John Creedons radio show, as well as being record Of The Week on RTE Radio 1. In time for this tour, Birds of Chicago have just released a live album ‘Live from Space’, which is getting brilliant worldwide press reviews and they have just finished a US tour with The Carolina Chocolate Drops.
Nero’s fractured country-soul voice wrapped in Russell’s silver and gold tones, is a fine thing. Not too perfect, not at all saccharine, you’ll hear echoes of mountain gospel, street corner doo-wop, and classicsoul. Accompanied by just a banjo and a guitar, it’s haunting. Fired by the band, it’s a full tilt revival.
Nero and Russell are most at home on the road - dovetailing their voices, singing their songs of hope, despair, love and electric seahorses. And honey bee apocalypses. And ice cream. And Tapeworms. And Pluto. And guns in tar pits! It’s familiar and strange stuff - the everyday and the magical. Since playing for Clonmel World Music last year, as well as non-stop touring and recording a new album JT and Alli have also managed to get married (to each other!) and have a baby girl, Ida Maeve.
Birds of Chicago are a stunning live band and Clonmel World Music are very exited to hosting them. Doors for the Birds Of Chicago gig will open at 8pm. There will be no support act and the band will start at 9pm prompt.
Tickets are only €15 each and are available in Premier Music Centre Clonmel on 052 612 9811, from Gerry Lawless on 086 338 9619 and from Martha Beardmore on 087 910 7201.
