Local Artist Lynn Kirkham held a family open day at her Greenmantle Arts Studios in Killea last weekend.

With the help of many volunteers there were a variety of arts and crafts workshops and demonstrations on offer including clay work, charcoal, willow and hazel weaving and metal work. Pancakes and marshmallows were served around a campfire with singing and music. Lots of children and adults came along, took part and had fun exploring the arts. There has been great feedback from the people who came along and Lynn intends to run some more events like it over the summer.

Lynn is a well-known basketmaker and contributing local artist who works with natural materials and metal.

The event last weekend was the launch of a fundraising campaign to urgently raise money to keep the Greenmantle Studios going. Like so many other homeowners in Ireland Lynn is sadly facing receivership and eviction. Not only does she face losing her home, a traditional Irish cottage that she creatively restored herself, but also her workplace and a unique local community amenity. She states that she is determined to use her hands and her artistic mind to save her home and what she believes is a worthwhile and meaningful creative life venture.

Tackling the problem in creative way, Lynn has launched a crowdfunding campaign with GoFundMe.com. This involves making online donations to the project through the website and with creative gifts and rewards on offer.

There will be basketry and willow workshops at Greenmantle on May 9th & 10th and ongoing children’s workshops over the next few weeks. Lynn makes baskets, sculptures and garden structures to order and you can visit the studio anytime by appointment. You can also organise a visit for your own group or school. Contact Lynn on 085 17 55553, email lynngreenmantle@gmail.com or follow Greenmantle Arts on Facebook.
