Summer Lectures

If you associate ancient history with yawning and an inexplicable desire to exit a building at speed, then next Tuesday’s free lecture by Dr. Geraldine Stout is all the therapy you’ll ever need! Co. Meath based Geraldine is one of the most engaging speakers on the circuit, and her passion for her research is infectious and overwhelming – and thats putting it mildly!

Geraldine’s current research is on the Cistercian Order in Ireland, and in this lecture she will focus on two important Abbeys – Bective (Co. Meath) and Hore (Cashel). Both Abbeys were daughter houses of the very first twelfth century Cistercian foundation at Melifont Abbey in Co. Louth. Bective was the first daughter house and Hore was the last, founded roughly one century later. So, Geraldine will examine the Cistercian order and the impact that their farming ‘modus operandi’ had on the Irish landscape, and how that system evolved and changed over the course of a hundred years. This lecture will also go a long way to showing how the Cistercians shaped and changed the landscape that we occupy in the present day.

The Tuesday 5th June lecture starts at 7.15pm sharp and will be held upstairs in Cashel Library. Admission is free, and all are welcome. This event comes with a warning, however; be prepared that you will leave the library informed, entertained and eager to learn some more about the ruins all around us!
