A new Irish film set in Borrisokane and starring Hollywood star Martin Sheen opened at Irish cinemas - Stella Days now features at the Nenagh Ormonde Cineplex and the IMC in Thurles.

Stella Days tells the fictional story of a local priest who opens a cinema to raise funds to build a new church in Borrisokane.

Based on a book written by local man Michael Doorley from Borrisokane, the film got the green light as soon as Sheen, star of award-winning television political drama The West Wing, signed up to play the lead role of priest Fr Daniel Barry.

The book, entitled Stella Days: The Life and Times of a Rural Irish Cinema, is set against the backdrop of the rural electrification scheme in Ireland in the mid-1950s with the whole story taking place in and around the town of Borrisokane.

Michael Doorley’s memoir describes life in the late 1950s and early 60s, as experienced by a young boy and his friends in the north Tipperary town painting a vivid picture of the streets, shops and pubs.

An important element of this world was the Stella cinema, created and run by local people, most notably the parish priest, the late Canon Cahill.

But the film is not just about the transformation of a parish hall into a cinema. It also concerns a man - a parish priest - who is uncertain of his role and needs to find his place in the community.
