Irish writer-director Andrew Legge was one of six filmmakers who were chosen from a group of 170 applicants to participate in the 19th edition of the Cannes Film Festival’s Cinefondation Residence.
The Source is delighted to screen two of his award winning films. The first, The Unusual Inventions of Henry Cavendish, tells the tale of a young inventor in Victorian Dublin who, thanks to his time machine, undoes the nasty deeds of the cad who stole the woman he loves.
The Chronoscope is how a historical ‘mockumentary’ should be done!
It mockuments how Irish scientist Charlotte Keppel invented a time machine in the 1930s. Immaculately constructed and altered 1930s footage is credibly narrated by actor Jeremy Irons, an absolute visual treat!
And finally the main feature, A Useful Life, is a lovely tribute to an old-fashioned art house cinema in Uruguay, told with affection and skill.
This movie centers on the last days of the Cinemateca, an art house cinema in Montevideo.
Attendances are falling, the projectors are beyond repair, the rent is in arrears, a sponsor is withdrawing subsidy because the place isn’t making a profit and finally an eviction order arrives.
It’s a moving, funny movie about the end of an era yet not quite the death of cinema.
Three different, but fantastic films bring our hugely successful film season to a close, all for the price of one!
