Roscrea’s 31st Wonder of the World, Monahincha
Abbey, was visited by over 30 historians from the
Hunt Museum last week.
Historian George Cunningham provided a guided tour, in a visit facilitated by the Roscrea Heritage Society, which has published a special booklet in honour of the occasion. The booklet, which is sure to become a prized possession, also included full colour pictures of the set of new post-cards now being published by Walsh Printers.
First stop then was Church Street, where unfortunately the Blackmills (with the original high cross inside) was closed due to interior on-going works. Then on to the Castle Complex where George Cunningham’s illustrations of the dereliction and the long story of the House, Castle Courtyard and gardens, and of Roscrea Heritage Society years of struggle, helped put the OPW’s conservation and restoration work into context. The gardens were really looking their best and the most common remark heard was, “we didn’t know you had anything like this”.
