The Source Film Club returns for a new season with a great selection of films for lovers of art-house and world cinema beginning with Wes Anderson’s latest gem ‘The Grand Budapest Hotel’.
Set in the fictional Republic of Zubrowka, the film has a Russian-doll structure to its narrative beginning in the 1980s in which a writer (Tom Wilkinson) recalls the days he spent at the titular hotel in the late 1960s where he made the acquaintance of its reclusive owner Zero Moustafa (F. Murray Abraham).
Moustafa in turn recalls his own days working as a young lobby boy to the hotel’s charismatic concierge M. Gustave (Ralph Fiennes) in the 1930s.
It is during this era in which the film’s main plot takes place, concerning a rare painting which has been bequeathed to M. Gustave by a wealthy widow upon her death, much to the anger of her greedy family who want it themselves.
What follows is a madcap caper involving military police, a prison break-out, assassins employed by the widow’s family as well as a touch of romance along the way.
Fans of Anderson’s work have come to expect certain elements from his films: quirky characters, lavish production design and labyrinthine plots and Grand Budapest Hotel doesn’t disappoint.
With a terrific ensemble cast that also includes Saoirse Ronan, Jude Law, Tilda Swinton and Jeff Goldblum, ‘The Grand Budapest Hotel’ is another masterpiece in Anderson’s unique cinematic oeuvre.
‘The Grand Budapest Hotel’ will be screened at The Source Arts Centre in Thurles on Wednesday, September 17th at 8pm.
Tickets are priced at €9 (€7 concession and €5 for Film Club members).
