The song It’s a Long Way to Tipperary celebrates its 100 year anniversary this week but the celebrations will be a long way from Tipperary as the song originated in Stalybridge in Greater Manchester. The world famous song was written by Jack Judge in a lcoal bar called the “New Market Inn” on January 30th, 1912 for a bet.
At the club he was teased by his friends who said that he would not be able to write a song and perform it in one day. The bet was made for five shillings, which at the time would buy a bottle of whisky and 6 dozen cigarettes.
