Sonya Kelly’s One-Woman Show Takes The Source, Thurles By Storm

Sonya Kelly’s one-woman show is taking Ireland by storm.

Sonya Kelly is best known from The Savage eye, but not a lot of people know she is also niece to legendary actor Frank Kelly and her grandfather ran a satirical magazine back in the day. So she most certainly has comedy in her DNA.

The Wheelchair on My Face, written and performed by Sonya, is a hilarious and wacky account of how she spent her first few years growing up navigating the world in near darkness. A visit to the school by the public health nurse confirmed that Sonya was almost blind and she prescribed her the obligatory pair of milk bottle glasses.

After that Sonya was no longer throwing pieces of bread to the floating crisp packets in the pond.

A good comic knows how to turn a physical quirk into idiosyncrasy and Sonya has often used her distinctive glassy stare as the basis for building character. The obstacles she encounters are both physical and social – how can you smile back at people when you don’t know that they are engaging with you? – but Kelly finds hilarious ways of compensating.

The Wheelchair on My Face is now embarking on a nationwide tour on the back of causing a storm at last year’s Absolut Festival, her performance was named one of the top ten in 2011 by Entertainment.ie. Don’t miss your chance to see the show at The Source Arts Centre on Friday, June 22nd at 8pm. Tickets: E16 (E14 concession).

Why not make a night of it and come early to enjoy a meal or bar bites at The Source Café from 7pm? Ring Matt on 0504-58858 for more details. The Source Bar will be open from 7pm. For bookings go to www.thesourceartscentre.ie or ring the Box Office on 0504 90204.
