ROSCREA historian and author, George Cunningham, launched a new online multimedia heritage trail to the ancient monastic site of Monaincha, just outside Roscrea in North Tipperary, on Sunday last at a packed event at Roscrea castle complex.
The eight-stop Monaincha Heritage Trail contains, audio, video, illustrations and text, and is voiced by George Cunningham, containing a selection of his collection of fine illustrations about Monaincha and its monastic traditions.
Monaincha is part of the rich monastic heritage of the Roscrea area, and the trail complements George’s Roscrea Heritage Trail of the town of Roscrea. That trail was launched a year ago; both were produced by Roscrea native, and ex-RTE producer Aileen O ‘Meara.
The Monaincha Hertigage Trail was launched as part of Heritage week 2012, which celebrates Ireland’s rich and varied heritage. Built heritage is this year’s theme. The trail was funded by the Heritage Council.
‘It’s an exciting time for heritage, especially built heritage, in this area, said George Cunningham. Thanks to the support of the Heritage Council, Aileen O’Meara and I have been able to make these stories that make Roscrea’s fine heritage available online in a multimedia way. It also means they can be accessed on smart phones and tablets.
