‘Wadjda’ will be screened at The Source Arts Centre in Thurles on Wednesday, January 29th (8pm).
A young girl struggles to accept her culture’s strict rules for her gender in Saudi Arabian director Haifaa Al-Mansour’s heart-warming drama ‘Wadjda’.
Ten-year old Wadjda (Waad Mohammad) is a carefree and streetwise young girl who lives with her mother in a Riyadh suburb where her frequent rebellious behaviour such as flouting her dress code tends to land her in trouble with her school principal. While girls her age are being taught to understand their place in society Wadjda only dreams of owning a bicycle so she can race her best friend Abdullah and beat him. When her school announces a Koran-reciting contest with a cash prize for the winner Wadjda sees her chance of acquiring the bicycle she longs for.
Tickets are priced at €9 (€7 concession and €5 for Film Club members). For more information please see thesourceartscentre.ie
