Roscrea Community Development Council (RCDC) are hosting a public meeting in the town’s Abbey Hall on Thursday next, November 20th.
The aim is to appoint a committee to organise the town’s 37th at 8pm to appoint a successive St. Patrick’s Day Parade in 2015.
All are most welcome to attend and it is hoped that organisations, clubs, societies and residents’ associations will be well represented on the night. Roscrea has had a St. Patrick’s Day Parade every year since 1979. On that historic St. Patrick’s Day in 1979 Roscrea Junior Chamber hosted a St. Patrick’s Day Parade in the town and it has continued to be a feature of Roscrea’s celebration of the National Feast Day for every year since.
Roscrea Junior Chamber ran the Parade until the late 1980’s when Roscrea Chamber of Commerce took over with the help of Adrian Hewson who acted as Parade Chairman. RCDC took over the running of the Parade since RCDC’s inception in 1995.
The running of the Parade has become more challenging in latter years due to the economic downturn and the difficulty in getting bands and indeed the increased cost of bands where they can be got.
There is an ever growing need for much greater community involvement required in the Parade if it is to grow and evolve in the years to come. While many St. Patrick’s Day Parades were organised and financed by those towns’ local authorities Roscrea’s Parade depended to a much greater extent on the community and its involvement and generosity.
It is hoped that the forthcoming public meeting will be well attended and that the people of Roscrea will show the same enthusiasm with regard to the Parade as the young Junior Chamber members of 1979 and all the Roscrea Parade volunteers since then.
