Carrick-on-Suir Camera Club’s top photographers of the past year were honoured by their peers at the club’s annual social last Friday night.
Around 50 members, family and friends attended the buffet function at The Carraig Hotel.
Highlight of the night was the presentation of awards to the overall winners of the year long club competitions for beginners, intermediate and advanced level photographers.
Waterford based photographer Margaret Lucas won the Photographer of the Year prize in the advanced section for the third year in a row while Andrew Geary from Piltown clinched the intermediate Photographer of the Year gong. Nan Bowe from Turkstown near Piltown received the beginners section Photographer of the Year prize.
Camera Club Chairman Tony Fitzgerald, who presented each prize winner with an engraved plaque, said the awards are presented to photographers who accumulated the top marks over the year in the club’s fortnightly photography competitions. Only club members, who entered more than 50% of the competitions were eligible for the prize.
He said the competition was quite serious with entrants receiving a critique on their pictures from the judges to guide and instruct them on how to improve their standard of photography.
“The standard of photography in our competitions is getting better and better each year. It’s getting a lot harder to win the awards. The first year we ran this, there were runaway winners but there is never runaway winners any more. If we stopped the competition earlier we would have had three different award winners.” Due to the progression of photographers to intermediate and advanced levels of proficiency behind the camera in the club, the number of members eligible for the beginners category of the club competitions is now low.
In view of this, Mr Fitzgerald said the Camera Club is seeking new members to join up.
The Club’s next big event is the Southern Association of Camera Clubs’ Inter-Clubs photography competition in Ennis on March 30. Carrick-on-Suir Camera Club hosted this high profile competition last year.
The Camera Club meets at The Carraig Hotel at 8pm every second Tuesday. The next meeting is on Tuesday, February 5. For more information check out the website www. carrickcameraclub.com.
