The Mater Foundation was delighted to receive a cheque for €E3,880 on Thursday, August 19, presented by Denis Heffernan, who raised this fantastic amount through sales and a fundraising launch night of his CD “Cashel, my home town” in aid of the Heart Appeal at the Mater Foundation.
This is a cause particularly close to Denis as he produced this CD in memory of his late nephew Alan Vahey, who died seven years ago from Sudden Adult Death Syndrome (SADS). Denis’s sister Alice is also a much valued supporter of the Mater Heart Appeal with their joint fundraising efforts over the years having raised a considerable amount for the Mater Family Heart Screening Clinic.
The family are deeply grateful for the support they have received from the local community in Cashel, who have not only contributed to their fundraising efforts but have honoured Alan’s memory by creating awareness for the Mater Heart Appeal and SADS.
During the cheque presentation in The Cashel Palace Hotel where Denis has worked most of his life, Mary Moorhead said, “we are truly grateful to Denis, Alice and family for their continual support of the Mater Heart Appeal, not only do they help to fund a vital service to Irish families but continue to create awareness of the Appeal and SADS in their community, thank you”
In Ireland, more than one young person dies from an undiagnosed heart condition each week. The Mater Heart Appeal raises funds for the Mater Hospital’s Family Heart Screening Clinic, where relatives of loved ones, who have died from SADS (Sudden Adult Death Syndrome) or survived a Sudden Cardiac Arrest, can be screened for undiagnosed heart conditions.
To date the clinic has seen over 1,500 family members who have needed screening because of a SADS death or a family history of inheritable cardiac disease. The clinic is funded solely through The Mater Heart Appeal. As yet no government funding has been received for this clinic in support of its important services.
Since launching in 2007 The Mater Foundation, together with The Mater Cardiac Team, have been raising funds to aid research projects and the development of the Family Heart Screening Clinic. As a result, the Cardiologists have been able to expand the number of clinics they are delivering, as well as increase the range of tests that are being carried out, offering an even more thorough screening process. In addition, these changes have also dramatically increased the number of families they are able to screen while reducing the waiting time considerably.
