One of the most iconic songs in musical theatre is ‘I Know Him So Well’ from the musical Chess, which St. Mary’s Choral Society are preparing to stage at the end of April.
In this duet two women, Svetlana, the Russian Chess Champion’s estranged wife and Florence, his mistress, express their bittersweet feelings for him and at seeing their relationships fall apart.
Taken from the concept album and subsequent musical Chess by Tim Rice and Benny Andersson and Bjorn Ulvaeus (from Abba), ‘I Know Him So Well’ remained at number one in the UK singles chart for 4 weeks when released in 1985 by Elaine Paige (Florence) and Barbara Dickson (Svetlana). The song remains the biggest selling UK chart single ever by a female duo.
The Clonmel production of Chess will feature Aine Hennessy as Florence and Michelle Moloney as Svetlana and booking will open at Marian’s on Tuesday, 17th April.
In the meantime, as rehearsals intensify, fundraising is in earnest for this mammoth production. The society will hold a table quiz on Thursday, 15th March in Liam Daly’s Lounge and all are welcome.
