Tipperary's Sharlene Mawdsley made a last-minute decision to join the European Team Championships at the weekend following the recent passing of her father and has issued a heartwarming statement following the event.
The Newport sprinter was returning to competitive action for the first time since the sudden death of her father Thomas in June.
Sharlene, who ran a season's best in he race, said that it was an emotional weekend but added that she is: "I don't want to continue to touch on this subject publicly however, I do want to express my gratitude to those who have helped me these last number of weeks.
"To those who helped me get to the start line, my competitors for being so gracious and understanding, to my teammates and the staff this weekend for their help, they trusted me, when I wasn’t sure I even trusted myself.

"I will never be able to express my thanks to all of the people who have been there these last number of weeks (I hope you know who you all are) but I will never forget it."
And the 26-year-old did her father and her family proud as she ran a season's best time of 50.93 to finish third in the 400m.
"Now we can look to the next race where I will start on home soil in Morton Games on July 11," she added.
Sharlene's recent social media posts have received hundreds of positive and heartfelt messages for the Irish athlete following the sad passing of her father.

One person commented: "Sending Love. Your dad was so proud speaking to me about you and watching the Olympics."
Another person said: "Your father will be so proud of you and how you carry yourself on and off the track. A true superstar. Best of luck with the rest of the season."
Speaking after the event over the weekend, Sharlene said: "Honestly don't even know how I made it around. But ya, a season's best is great, it's just a shame that I didn't come first as I would have loved the top points, but it probably would have taken a PB to do that today."
