The annual Boston Scientific Clonmel AC Half Marathon returned to the streets of Clonmel last Sunday.
With a new start and finish line in the Kickham Plaza, athletes were treated to a wide variety of what the town has to offer.
Taking in such sights as St Patrick’s Well, Marlfield Lake and the Suir Blueway, the 436 finishers then navigated the closed roads within the town centre to arrive safely back at the fabulous finishing straight within the Plaza area.

The pleasant conditions brought supporters out in force to cheer on the participants and the atmosphere at the finishing area made this a really enjoyable event for participants and supporters alike.
Clonmel AC are very grateful to Boston Scientific for their continued sponsorship of this event. Without Boston’s support, the event would not be the marquee race that is.

Finishers received a quality t-shirt and medal, along with a goody bag and a plentiful supply of much- needed water once they crossed the finish line.
Thanks are extended to O’Donnells Crisps, Clonmel Healthcare and Glenpatrick Spring Water for their support with the goody bag and water supplies.
Thanks are also extended to Gaelcholáiste Chéitinn for the use of their facilitates, where participants were treated to an array of well-received refreshments donated by club members.
A major feature of organising an event as big as this, with the significant logistical challenges it presents, is the volunteers and local community coming together to collaborate.
Clonmel AC are indebted to all who supported the event, which promotes both the sport of athletics and the town of Clonmel, which welcomed participants from both the local area and from further afield.
The support of Tipperary County Council was a key contributor to the overall success of the event. With the use of the town plaza and the facilitation of road closures, athletes safely navigated the course while getting a tour of the town centre and local beauty spots.
Special thanks are extended to all the stewards and volunteers, especially the Civil Defence team, who give of their time freely to ensure the safety of all. Bikemarshals Ireland were a welcome addition to the safety protocols and ensured that the event proceeded successfully.
In the race itself there were home club winners in both the men’s and ladies’ races. David Mansfield of Clonmel AC took the overall race win in commanding fashion, with Laura Cooney of Clonmel AC stamping her authority on the ladies field when picking up an equally impressive win.
With over 50 Clonmel AC club members participating, with many fine performances, and many more members and local supporters facilitating the smooth running of the event, it was a fantastic community event that showcased the home club and the town of Clonmel in a very positive light.
