Carrick-on-Suir's Brewery Lane Drama Group marked its 70th birthday in the best way possible by staging a week long run of one of Ireland’s most renowned plays – Sean O’Casey’s Juno and the Paycock.

Brewery Lane Theatre was sold out for all seven performances of the drama that ran from Saturday, November 22 to last Saturday, November 29.

Walter Dunphy, Brewery Lane Drama Group's PRO, said they had a waiting list of 40 people hoping for a seat cancellation to get a chance to see the play that is set in a Dublin tenement at the start of the Irish Civil War.

“It was a very successful run. The whole production went very well and everyone loved it. You can't ask for any more. It was a play people identified with. It had pathos, humour and tragedy. It had it all,” he said.

This is the group’s first staging of Juno and the Paycock in 36 years and its fourth production of the drama in its 70 year history.

Colm Power directed the play and it featured a large cast of the group’s actors including Barry Comerford, Paula O’Dwyer, Johnny Irish, Maria Clancy, Eibhlín De Paor, Neil Bourke, Finn McLaughlin, Michael Raggett, Liam Wells, Kyle Walsh, David Shee, Walter Power, Peter McGrath, Pat Quinn Bolger, John O’Driscoll, and Margaret St John.

Brewery Lane members will gather again this Friday night to celebrate the drama group’s 70th anniversary at a special dinner in the Carraig Hotel.

The group was founded in 1955 by Liam Hogan and Liam Clancy, who went onto become an international star with his brothers in the Clancy Brothers ballad group.
