Today is the closing day for the public to have their say on the proposed demolition of 52 houses in Cashel.

Independent TD for Tipperary, Mattie McGrath, is calling on members of the public to make their voices heard regarding Tipperary County Council’s Part VIII application for Site Remediation Works at Ballypadeen, Cashel, Co. Tipperary.

The proposal, which has now been advertised, seeks consent for the demolition of 52 partially constructed houses on the site, along with associated works.

Deputy McGrath has expressed concern over the plan, at a time when over 3,500 individuals remain on the housing waiting list in Tipperary:

“These homes were built with full planning permission and, despite their age, remain in surprisingly sound condition. A Quantity Surveyor’s report estimates that demolishing the structures and full remediation of the site will cost in the region of €8 million.

"We have no details from Tipperary County Council on what the exact costs will be to the taxpayer. I have sought under freedom of Information the full details on the cost to the taxpayer associated with this site and the proposed demolition of these houses and I have been refused access to this information and believe the full costs associated with this proposal should be published and considered as part of this public consultation.”

The proposed works include:

• Demolition of 52 derelict, partially complete houses
• Removal of four metal cabins
• Erection of palisade fencing at the site entrance

Deputy McGrath added: “In the midst of a national housing crisis, it is incomprehensible to me that viable housing stock would be destroyed rather than refurbished and allocated for social and affordable housing. This proposal raises serious questions about the expenditure of public funds and the logic of pursuing demolition over completion.”

Plans and details are available  to view online at planning.localgov.ie and consultations.tipperarycoco.ie.

Submissions or observations may be made in writing to:

Damien Ginty, Director of Services/District Director, Tipperary-Cahir-Cashel Municipal District, Civic Offices, Rosanna Road, Tipperary, Co. Tipperary, E34 WD51

Deputy McGrath concluded: “I strongly urge the public to engage with this process and make their views known. This is a critical opportunity to ensure proper planning and sustainable development that prioritises housing needs and responsible use of public funds.”
