The 10 best Christmas songs to get you in the festive spirit

If you're struggling to get in the festive spirit this holiday season, these ten Christmas songs are sure to do the trick:

Last Christmas: Wham's song is played on repeat across all radio stations, tv channels, and music streaming sites. It is George Michael and Wham! at its best, and it is one of those Christmas songs that everybody knows and will never remember the first time they heard it.

Driving home for Christmas: Whether you live near your family, or far away, Chris Rea's soothing singing voice never fails to create a sense of excitement for those coming home for Christmas. The yearning to come home for the festive season, whether you live at home or abroad always creates an air of bliss and serenity in the lead-up to Christmas.

Fairytale of New York: This is a classic favourite for Irish people. It tells the tale of two people living abroad and the reliance they have on each other during the Christmas period. It is a song of abandoned dreams and lost hope, and the lyrics intrinsically capture the spirit of the song. It is beautifully sung by the late Kirsty McColl and Shane McGowan and has a memorable melody.

Baby, It's Cold Outside:  A song that will make you groove to the Christmas spirit, and will bring a wave of nostalgia to your door. There are so many versions of this song that exist, and each one is as good as the next. It is often sung by a male and female singer. Penned in the 1940s, it does not make a direct reference to Christmas but it’s always associated with the Christmas season.

Do They Know It's Christmas Time: The opening line is immediately recognizable with the phrase 'It's Christmas Time' along with the familiar low beat associated with the song. This song has been recorded four times for charity, first released in 1984, 1989, 2004, and 2014 and each version was sung by celebrities to raise money for charity. The music video showed the struggles faced by people living in the third world and strikes a chord every single year.

Santa Clause Is Coming To Town: A children's favourite. It reminds the children all around the world that Santa is never too far away, and is watching them in the lead-up to Christmas. It creates a sense of excitement and happiness and adds to the magical joy that Santa Clause brings on the 25th of December.

Jingle Bells: Just like Santa Clause Is Coming To Town, this is another classic favourite for children and adults. It is often one of the first songs we are taught in school, and it is the epitome of Christmas. It is sung in plays, tv shows, movies, and Christmas Carolling.

All I Want For Christmas Is You: It's Mariah Carey's world and we just live in it during the festive season. Dubbed as the Queen of Christmas, Mariah Carey's famous Christmas song is played everywhere you go. The opening second of the song is so immediately familiar and is often the first song played on the radio, as well as the last.

White Christmas: A distinct, generational favourite that adds to the Christmas music magic. Snow is so often associated with Christmas, and so many people dream of experiencing an idyllic White Christmas. The song will entice you to cosy up next to the fire with a cup of hot chocolate.

It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year: The best season saved for last, and this song sums up exactly why Christmas is the most wonderful time of the year.
