Clonmel has had a museum in some shape or form since the 1940’s. In the 1980’s the museum and library service came under the management of Tipperary County Council S.R, with its first, full time curator.

Today, there is just 12 local authority museums in Ireland, with a broad geographical spread. This number does not take into consideration the many more community and voluntary run museums as well as the larger national institutions across the country.

In these times of rapid social change should museums have higher prominence, more funding, standardised professional grades across the public local authority museum sector, and organisational leadership? Has the role of the museum changed since it first opened its doors in Mick Delahunty Square 25 years ago?

These are just some of the issues that will be discussed in a History Ireland Hedge School podcast on Saturday 17th May at 2pm in Tipperary Museum, Clonmel.
