Yes I think we have enjoyed a good spell since late last year and into this year, and with the scheme ending in June, there is still a bit of sales left to go. Toyota is No.1 for scrappage at present and the service offer has been re-introduced on Aygo and Yaris combined with a year’s road tax it is a great incentive, with up to €4k offers available until June it makes Toyota well up there on people’s shopping list

FINANCE: is it difficult to get finance at present?

There is a common perception that car finance is difficult to come by when purchasing a new or used car, but in my experience finance is readily available, the main difference now is that full finance ie buy a car for €10k and borrow €10k would hard to obtain, whereas a deposit or trade in with equity in it normally suffices. Also the term of the finance is very dependant on the age of the car and amounts under €5k are not really viable at this point

NEW CARS: what’s new or unique to the Toyota range of cars?

We have the new Landcruiser out since January and the Verso-s has just been launched which competes with Nissan Note/Opel Meriva size, plus a lot of the range like Yaris, Corolla, Auris, Avensis, Verso and Prius have all had recent spec and enhancements done in the last 12 months, most carry €104/€156 in both petrol and diesel. The other good qualities are 15,000 service intervals, low maintenance, excellent reliability, diverse choice, 3year/100,000kms warranty and top trade in prices when you decide to change, be it another Toyota or different brand of your choice, most dealers are happy to accept a Toyota as a good trade in.

WARRANTY: what type of reassurance does the customer have when buying a used car from your garage?

We have a 12 or 24 month used car Toyota warranty on all used Toyota cars we sell, plus roadside assistance and the same for 12 months on any used car we sell under 8 years old and less than 128,000kms travelled. We also service, valet and fit tyres pre sale and obtain new NCT if required, so that are used car quality is of the highest standard, all cars are individually priced and any inspection is welcome if required.

PETROL V DIESEL: are customers buying more diesel than petrol cars?

Since 2008 the change in the criteria for road tax assessment where CO2 emissions rather than engine size dictated the amount you paid has led to a lot of confusion amongst new and more so used car customers, where the perception is that diesel cars are what to buy. However while diesel was initially cheaper to tax and reduced in price, manufacturers’ have now levelled the playing field, so to speak, with road tax on petrol cars now matching their diesel counterparts in the main on new cars, and are cheaper to buy. In the used car market customers will find it harder to source a 2008 onwards, diesel car as petrol is still the main trade in car offered to dealers and because of the abundance still out there the residual values have lowered while the diesel has increased (supply/demand). This in essence means that while a used diesel car is cheaper to tax and has a better fuel economy, you are paying substantially more to buy it in contrast to its petrol equivalent so ultimately the customer must decide which is better for them based on useage and how long they intend to keep it etc. versus the lower price for a petrol version.
