Destination Dubai for a vibrant global hotspot

I am going to take my mother for a two week trip to Dubai as it is somewhere she has always wanted to visit. Can you please advise us on what we should do during our stay?

Dubai is a vibrant global city and business hub located in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). It is located south east of the Persian Gulf on the Arabian Peninsula and has the largest population of all the Emirates. Dubai is known for its innovative, large construction projects, its sporting events and its multi-national community which makes it one of the most cosmopolitan cities in the world.

Dubai is also known the world over for its amazing shopping malls which offer so many attractions that a shopping trip in Dubai will be an experience you will never forget. The Dubai Mall is the world’s largest shopping centre and forms part of the Burj Khalifa complex, which is home to some 1,200 shops! Some of the main attractions include the Gold Souk, a Galleries Lafayette department store, an ice rink, an indoor theme park, a 22-screen Cineplex which is the largest in Dubai, the Dubai Aquarium, and Hamleys – the British toy store.

The Ibn Battuta Mall is also well worth a visit. This mall was named after the 14th Century explorer who spent 29 years travelling through the Middle East and Asia. The mall is divided into six designated courts with each based on the areas he travelled – China, India, Egypt, Persia, Tunisia and Andalusia. Each court is decorated to resemble these areas of the world, and makes for an interesting walk around with beautifully decorated sculptures, ceilings and mini displays.

Dubai is a playground for people who enjoy trying new sports and activities. The city literally offers every kind of activity you can think of, from scuba diving to motor racing. There are also many horse riding centres in Dubai including the Dubai Equestrian Centre, the Jebel Ali Equestrian Club and Club Joumana, where rides through the desert are organised regularly. If you want to try your hand at skiing, Ski Dubai is located within the Mall of the Emirates and is the world’s third-largest indoor ski slope, measuring 400 meters and using 6,000 tonnes of snow. The slope features an artificial mountain range, an ice bridge, a cable lift, a snow maze, an ice slide, cold-water aquaria and special sound and light effects.

For a more relaxing afternoon, you could enjoy the sunshine on one of the many beach parks that Dubai offers. Beach Parks are a unique feature in Dubai. Ideal for families, the beach parks offer shelters, chalets, restaurants, swimming pools and protected beaches. They are a lovely way to spend a day and enjoy Dubai’s gorgeous year round sunshine and warmth. The Jumeirah Beach Park is a particularly popular spot on the Jumeirah Beach Road. It offers full beach facilities with round-the-clock lifeguard service, a desert garden and barbecue areas.

Dubai is a city that offers rare opportunities to experience local and ethnic cuisine from almost every region in the world. Hotels offer a remarkably diverse range of food and beverage outlets, partly because they attract large numbers of local residents as well as their own guests. Outside the hotels and club premises, restaurants are not permitted to serve alcohol; however there are great restaurants to be found in all parts of the city including Deira, Bur Dubai, Satwa, Jumeirah and Dubai Marina. International theme restaurants such as TGI Friday’s, Planet Hollywood and Hard Rock Café are popular as are fast food chains.

After a busy couple of weeks, you may want to treat yourselves to a day at one of Dubai’s many fantastic spas. Influences are drawn from the East and West and this international feel is evident with spa themes ranging from Moroccan to Egyptian, Balinese to Thai and contemporary. Some of the top spots include the Talise Spa at Madinet Jumeirah, the Talise Spa at Jumeirah Emirates Tower and the Talise Spa at Jumeirah Beach Hotel. All the spas are set in beautiful locations with stunning interiors, what better way to end a once in a lifetime holiday.
