Lady footballers lose in Munster final

Moyle Rovers

Moyle Rovers

Hard luck to our senior ladies who went down gallantly to last year’s champions St. Valentine’s of Cork in the Munster B Plate final last Saturday in Mallow. The winners were the stronger and more experienced outfit and had the benefit of having contested this competition last year.

Our girls started brightly and had two great scoring chances which they didn’t convert. This seemed to jolt the oppostion and St. Val’s scored four points on the trot. Moyle Rovers opened the account with a free. The Moyle Rovers defense then settled and began to cope better with the opposition forwards. They forced a lot of errors and wides from St. Vals. Unfortunately a lot of good work was undone by some wayward passing and poor finishing up front. Just before haltime Gemma O’Dwyer had to leave the field due to a nasty ankle injury. The halftime score was 0-10 to 0-4 in favour of St. Val’s. On the resumption Moyle Rovers got themselves right back into the game with a very well earned goal scored by Rosin McGrath to leave just three points between the sides. The goal seem to spur St. Val’s rather than Moyle Rovers and the response was swift and clinical as they scored four points and then a goal to put safe distance between the teams. From here they tacked on more scores to just a single point for Moyle Rovers. The final score was 2-19 to 1-5. To play in a Munster Final is a great privilege for any team and it was great to see our club compete at the very highest level against one of the best club teams in the country. Well done to Keith, Catherine and Anthony for the hard work and effort. The game was played at a very fast pace and great credit to both teams for the quality of football that was played.

We held our annual U8 and U10 blitz on Saturday last on a beautiful afternoon in Monroe. We had 2 teams in both grades competing against Cahir, Newcastle and Fethard.

Looking around at each of the 4 pitches there were great displays of skills, scoring, team play, leadership, development and most of all “Fun” shown by all girls from each club. A special mention to all Moyle Rovers girls for their commitment and participation in training all year- well done. Finally a big ‘Thank You’ to all involved in running a very successful blitz, players, mentors, home club, visiting clubs, referees, parents and those who helped with refreshments.

Our U12s finished their season on a high note as we travelled to Fethard on Saturday. We had a great game of camogie with all the girls getting in on the action. We created plenty of scoring opportunities with great defensive play. Scores came from Leah McGarry, Emma Cronin, Lucy Whyte, Louise Norris and Áine Fitzgerald. Our defence of Yasmin Quirke, Amy Norris and Sophie Delaney were rock solid in front of our brave goalkeeper Clare O’Dwyer who kept a clean sheet. We had great clearances from Emer Ryan in the middle of the field and Eve Ryan, Erin Mitten and Karen Meehan were tenacious in the full forward line. We thank Fethard for their hospitality and welcome. Credit must go to John Ryan and Anne McGarry who have trained these girls since February. These girls have had the longest season of all our underage teams and we commend them and their parents for their commitment and dedication all year. We will take a break from practice for the moment.

Team: Karen Meehan, Erin Mitten, Clare O’Dwyer, Yasmin Quirke, Emer Ryan, Áine Fitzgerald, Emma Cronin, Lucy Whyte, Louise Norris, Amy Norris, Eve Ryan, Leah McGarry and Sophie Delaney.

Following on from the summer camp our club is represented at the Cúl Camp Skills Competition in Dr Morris Park on Tuesday, October 30 by Nicole Delaney, Caitriona Phelan and Leah McGarry. Congratulations girls and we wish them well. That closes the playing season for the Moyle Rovers camogie club for 2012. To all who participated, helped and encouraged through the year we say Thank you.
