Tipperary ladies lose to Waterford in championship opener

Waterford were first to register a score, scoring two points straight away.

In the fourth minute Gillian O’Brien’s attempt to score was deflected into Edel Hanley’s capable hands and Edel placed the ball in the back of the net for a Tipperary goal. Waterford’s Michelle McGrath replied with a point to bring the sides level.

The scoring continued to be neck and neck until the final ten minutes of the first half when two points by Edel Hanley followed by a Niamh Lonergan point put Tipperary in to a three point lead at the interval, Tipperary 1-7 Waterford 0-7.

Tipperary were held scoreless for the first six minutes of the second half while Waterford added three points to the score line to level the sides again.

In the 37th minute Edel Hanley pointed a free to give Tipperary back the lead.

Lorraine O’Shea, Tipperary’s wing forward added to this when she scored a point after her solo run from midfield. Waterford scored the next two points to level the sides again.

Edel Hanley scored a point from a free to which Waterford replied with another two points giving Waterford back the lead.

In the 48th minute Waterford’s Dearbhla Ni hAodha scored a goal but Tipperary won the kick out from this goal and passed the ball back down the field to Lorraine O’Shea who scored a goal. The margin once again was a point for Waterford which Tipperary’s Gillian O’Brien brought back level when she scored a point from play.

In a game which was up for grabs, Waterford added two further points only for Tipperary’s Lorraine O’Shea to reduce the deficit to the minimum heading in to the last five minutes.

The decisive score arrived in the 57th minute when a side line ball by Waterford’s Michelle Ryan went all the way to the Tipperary net. Ann Dunphy added a further point for Waterford to finish the scoring as the home side ran out winners on a scoreline of Waterford 2-17 Tipperary 2-12.

The next round of the Munster Championship is against Limerick in a Tipperary venue next weekend.
