Cahir’s U16 Camogie team retained their U16A title at the Ragg, last Tuesday, with a fine win over Drom and Inch.
In the opening minutes the teams exchanged points. Then followed a period of dominance for Cahir with Roisin O’Donnell scoring a from play and Ashling Moloney scoring 4 points.
Drom hit back with a goal from Ciara Manton and a point each by Niamh Ryan and Miriam Campion which had the teams level. Cahir finished the half stronger with an Ashling Moloney free and a point from play by Caoimhe Condon. Half time Cahir 0.08 Drom 1.03. Despite a strong breeze in the second half Cahir got off to the best possible start with corner forward Eadaoin O’Gorman chasing down the Drom defence and getting a goal. A crucial save by Keely Haplin denied Drom a badly needed goal but they had to settle for a point by Niamh Treacy from the resultant 45. Caoimhe Condon with 3 second half points was having the game of her life, Roisin Howard picked up a point from play and then Ashling Moloney pointed from a free while Drom got 2 points through Niamh Treacy. Drom were denied a goal from a free only to see the shot saved by Ashling Moloney. In the final minutes Cahir showed their class with some wonderful passing movements from defence to attack which saw them pull ahead by 6pts but their supporters had to live on their nerves for a while longer when an opportunist effort by Niamh Treacy went all the way to the Cahir net. However Cahir were not to be denied as Roisin Howard had the final say with a point.
This was a superb win for Cahir and great credit is due to all the squad and management of Mary Howard, Carol Keating and Marie Casey. County Board Chairman Joe Cahill presented the cup to Roisin Costigan. The team returned to Cahir in triumph. This group of players have now won U12A, U14A and U16A county titles in both camogie and ladies football - a wonderful achievement! See photo p33.
