Good win for Cappawhite u-16 hurlers in final

With just the U14B and U14C Hurling League Finals along with the U13 Football Garda Cup and Plate competitions to be decided, the end line of what can only be described as a very busy playing season is now in sight.

With just the U14B and U14C Hurling League Finals along with the U13 Football Garda Cup and Plate competitions to be decided, the end line of what can only be described as a very busy playing season is now in sight.

Having lost out to a very polished Rockwell Rvs side a week earlier in the West final of the U16B hurling championship, Lattin/Cullen were back in Sologhead on Saturday afternoon last hoping to make amends in the Centenary Co – Op sponsored U16B hurling league decider but again had to settle for the runners up spot as Cappawhite made no mistake in landing the silverware with a well deserved four point margin win.

Played at a tempo and competitive edge all over the field on par with the higher grade, the quality of the defensive play and scoring ability shown by both sides contributed to what was a cracking hours hurling.

With defences being well tested in the opening six minutes, Shane Neville finally got the scoring underway with a pointed free for Lattin/Cullen but three points by Robert Quirke, Thomas Costello and Rian Doody had Cappawhite back on track.

With both sides vying for any advantage Kevin Kinane fired home a Lattin/Cullen goal and at the other end free taker Rian Doody put Cappawhite ahead with two pointed frees to lead 0-5 to 1-1 after a quarter of an hour gone.

In a frantic fifteen minutes period of dominance leading up to half time Lattin/Cullen regained the lead producing a further six points with Shane Neville leading the way with three, two by Mikey O’Halloran and one by Tony Byrnes while Cappawhite captain and mid fielder Darragh Clancy with two points and one by Robert Quirke brought their half time tally to 0-8 to Lattin/Cullens 1-7.

The half time team talk by the Cappa selectors certainly had the desired effect and taking complete control landed eight points in the opening fifteen minutes of the second half to go six clear with Rian Doody shooting five, Robert Quirke, Thomas Costello and James Dee one each and for Lattin/Cullen they now had a battle on their hands to get back in the game.

And fight back they did reducing the deficit to three with points by Mikey O’Halloran (2) and one by Shane Neville but a goal by full forward and U14 captain Robert Quirke restored Cappas six point advantage with four minutes remaining on the clock and having captured the U14B Hurling Co title a week earlier, further silverware beckoned.

Lattin/Cullens Tony Byrnes, Kevin Kinane and Sean Crowe all pointed in the closing minutes but Robert Quirke had the final say for Cappawhite with a point for a well deserved four point victory.
