Grangemockler/Ballyneale denied Fr Sheehys the chance to win back-to-back titles when getting home by two points in the South u-21 HC ‘C’ final on Saturday night in Ned Hall Park.

Fr Sheehys were leading 2-8 to 2-6 ten minutes into the second half when they lost influential Brain Hyland to injury and he loss was significant.

Thomas Grinsell proved to the star man for the winners, coming to their rescue on a number of occasions.

The game was only two minutes old when Brian Hyland had a point from play with Sean Flynn adding another in the 5th minute. Brian Hyland pointed a free from the middle of the field in the 6th minute with Sean Flynn adding a great point from play in the 8th minute to go 0-4 to no score before Thomas Dineen pointed from play for Ballyneale.

In the 11th minute Sean Flynn shot past Andrew Bolger for the first goal of the game and within a minute he had a point from play - and with both Sean and Brian dominating the centre field for Fr Sheehys, it was Brian Hyland who scored a point from play in the 13th minute and within a minute took a free from the middle of the field that went all the way to the net to build up a commanding lead for Fr Sheehys 2-6 to 0-1.

In the 21st minute Grangemockler/Ballyneale were handed a lifeline when Fr Sheehys goalie failed to clear a save with Thomas Norton on hand to tap into an empty net. Within a minute Sean Bates added a point and Thomas Grincell pointed a long range free to leave the score Fr Sheehys 2-6 Grangemockler/Ballyneale 1-3.

Thomas Dineen scored a goal for Grangemockler/Ballyneale with Thomas Grincell pointing another long range free and when Thomas Dineen added a great point from play in the 30th minute there was only a point between the sides but in stoppage time Robbie O’Brien scored a point, the best of the half having ran 60 metres to fire over the bar for Fr Sheehys, to leave the half time score Fr Sheehys 2-7 Grangemockler 2-5,

At the start of the second half there was an exchange of points both from frees by Thomas Grincell and Brian Hyland who shortly after had to leave the field with a cut to his ear.

Thomas Dineen added a point from play in the 42nd minute with Thomas Norton adding another point in the 45th minute.

Grangemockler/Ballyneale were attaining control of the middle of the field to draw level for the first time. In the 48th minute Fr Sheehys pulled away with a point from Shane O’Brien and within a minute were level again, this time a great point from the middle of the field by Thomas Grinsell who with Conor Fogarty were dominating the backs and only when a free was awarded to Fr Sheehys did Sean Flynn edge ahead wita point.

Grinsell brought them level again in the 55th minute when pointing a free at 2-10 each.

However it was Grangemockler/Ballyneale who lasted the pace best when Thomas Norton fired over the leading point in the 57th minute and when they were awarded a free in the 60th minute 40 metres out Thomas Grinsell made no mistake in taking his point, leaving two points between the sides at the final whistle.

Best for Grangrmockler/Ballyneale were Conor Fogarty, Thomas Grinsell, Thomas Dineen and Thomas Norton while for a gallant Fr Sheehys, Shane Ryan, Stephen O’Driscoll, Sean Flynn and Brian Hyland, Shane Lowry were best.
