South u-21 FC ‘A’
Clonmel Commercials 3-13 Anner Gaels 0-1
Commercials got their defence of their Sean O’Donoghue under 21 South football title off to a winning start after a comfortable afternoon at a windy Monroe on Saturday.
Without a number of players for various reasons, Commercials commanded the game and the result was never in doubt.
Playing against the wind in the opening half Commercials defended well in the early stages as Anner Gaels opened brightly. Captain Jamie Peters was commanding at full back but soon Commercials began to get on top in all sectors.
It took 9 minutes for the game’s first score to arrive. A goal from Liam Murchan broke the deadlock and Evan Commerford followed up with a point a minute later. Points from Paudie White and Shane Power were added against the breeze with the Gaels only response coming in the final minute of the half when Cathal Hurley pointed from a free.
On a negative note for Commercials, a shoulder injury to Michael Quinlivan early in the game is a cause for concern and with a growing injury list the management will be hoping that it is not too serious.
A five point gap at the break was soon widened when Emmet Ryan goaled in the opening minute. Commercials completely took over in the second half and added a total of 2-10 with the breeze in their backs. Emmet Ryan was again on hand to goal in the 18th minute.
There were some fine performances throughout the team. Jamie Peters was solid at full back, Seamus Kennedy was steady on the 40 while Gearoid Buckley was strong throughout in the middle of the field.
Up front Emmet Ryan, Shane Power, Evan Comerford and Paudie White all performed well.
Anner Gaels found the going tough but they performed admirably and there were some excellent individual displays particularly Cathal Hurley, David Hayes and Ger Maher. The combination are now out of this competition while Commercials will face a tough test when taking on Moyle Rovers in the final group game which will decide the placings in the group.
