County Junior A Hurling Semi-Final

Moycarkey-Borris 0-21

Toomevara 1-13

Moycarkey-Borris deservedly progressed to the county junior A hurling final following a reasonably impressive win over Toomevara at Templemore on Saturday afternoon.

Toomevara, however, were left cursing their luck. The Greyhounds led 1-8 to 0-9 in the 29th minute when Mark Grace, a fine prospect at corner-back, picked up a careless second yellow card to reduce his side to fourteen men.

Toome battled on gamely and were level (1-12 to 0-15) with fifteen minutes to play. Moycarkey-Borris, however, had the legs in the final quarter and out-scored the men from the North 0-6 to 0-1 thereafter. Sadly, the frustration got the better of the Toomevara late on when Terry Dunne picked up a second yellow card in the 64th minute while Aidan Cahill was shown a straight red in the fifth minute of injury time.

Following early points from Mark Harty (free), Séamus O’Meara, Pat Ralph (free) and Brian Moran the sides were locked at 0-2 apiece after nine minutes. Toomevara proceeded to dominate thereafter with points from David Kennedy, Terry Dunne, Mark Harty (two) and Tony Delaney helping the Greyhounds into a 0-7 to 0-3 lead by the 18th minute.

Moycarkey-Borris steadied themselves in impressive fashion with points from John Bergin, Robert Doran and Pat Ralph (free) leaving one between them (0-7 to 0-6) by the 21st minute.

A Terry Dunne point handed Toome a two-point lead, but Moycarkey-Borris responded once more with points from Pat Ralph and Robert Doran levelling matters.

In eight minutes Moycarkey-Borris had ominously out-scored Toomevara 0-5 to 0-1, but Toome looked to have struck for a crucial three-pointer in the 26th minute when Terry Dunne plundered a smashing goal.

Pat Ralph responded from a placed ball before the misfortunate Mark Grace collected two yellow cards in the space of two minutes to transform this contest - half-time: Toomevara 1-8 Moycarkey-Borris 0-9.

Moycarkey-Borris out-scored Toome 0-3 to 0-1 in the opening seven minutes of the second half to tie the game (0-12 to 1-9).

Toomevara clung on gamely and thanks to the outstanding free taking of Mark Harty and no little effort from a resolute half-back line Toome led 1-12 to 0-14 with eighteen minutes to play.

Now however the imbalance in personnel began to tell with Moycarkey-Borris’ Pat Ralph converted three placed balls to hand his side a 0-17 to 1-12 lead by the 48th minute.

Toome responded with a Mark Harty free, but it was all Moycarkey-Borris now with free man Joseph O’Sullivan expertly cutting out the threat posed by Terry Dunne at full-forward. Indeed, Moycarkey-Borris charged toward the finish line with Pat Ralph converted three more placed balls before Aidan Maher cracked over a fine individual effort in the 63rd minute.
