Last Saturday was U14 Hurling County Final day and pride of place this week goes to the West Tipp champions Clonoulty/Rossmore who bridged a four year gap in capturing the U14A title with a three point margin victory over the North Tipp champions, Newport.

Played in perfect conditions at the Ragg, Clonoulty who had snatched victory from the jaws of defeat against Durlas Og in the Co. Semi Final, knew they would have a battle on their hands to overcome a Newport side who were very impressive nine point margin winners over Ballingarry in their Semi Final.

From the opening exchange of points by Newport’s Kealan Floyd and Clonoulty’s Dillon Quirke, the game was level on three occasions until the turning point came with ten minutes remaining when Clonoulty/Rossmore having soaked up a lot of pressure saw a Dillon Quirke 65 go all the way to the net which stunned Newport and turned the tide firmly in Clonoulty’s favour to set them on the road to victory.

Right from the throw in both sets of backs were giving absolutely nothing away and with scores in short supply only one point separated the sides at the end of the first half, with Clonoulty/Rossmore holding the edge with two points from Dillon Quirke and a pointed free by Cathal Bourke to Neweport Gaels 0-2.

The trend continued throughout the second half until the all important breakthrough Clonoulty/Rossmore were looking for came in the vital goal by team captain Dillon Quirke and coupled with two pointed frees by Cathal Bourke made for a final tally of 1-5 to Newport Gaels 0-5.

Clonoulty/Rossmore - Nicky Kearns, Tomas Ryan, Anthony Maher, Padraig Carew, Jack Ryan, Dylan Kennedy, Jimmy Ryan (Con), Donnachada Quirke, Dillon Quirke 1-2 (1-01 frees), Cathal Bourke 0-3 frees, Owen Ryan (L), Martin Ryan, Aidan Loughman, Odhran Quirke, Nickey Mockler.

Subs. Nathan Slattery for Nickey Mockler (H/T), Sean Ryan, Patrick Kennedy, Phillip O’Dwyer, Anthony McCarthy, Eugene Ryan and Oisin Fryday.

Part of the double header played at the Ragg was the U14B Hurling County final where Cappawhite failed in their bid to land the spoils having to settle for the runners up spot to Kildangan who came out on top with two points to spare.

Kildangan got off to a flyer and after fifteen minutes were five points up before William Armshaw and Rian Doody pointed for Cappawhite which still stood at half time.

Four minutes into the second half Kildangan had stretched the lead to five points until a real period of dominance by Cappawhite saw Robert Quirle level the game with 1-2 and all to play for.

Kildangan again forged ahead with a point which was quickly cancelled out by Rian Doody with a levelling point for Cappawhite.

However Kildangan coached by former Tipp Senior Hurling star Dara Egan weren’t to be denied and hit two unanswered points on the closing three minutes to take the U14B Hurling title.

Final score, Kildangan 0-10 Cappawhite 15.

In the U14C Hurling Co. Final played in Ned Hall Pk, South Tipp champions Carrick Davins proved too good for Rosegreen who despite their best efforts could never come to terms with a very slick Davins side.

While taking nothing away from the winners who scored 8-10 to Rosegreen 1-2, a twenty nine point margin separating the two sides at the final whistle does nothing for the team at the receiving of such a score line end but speaks volumes for the grading applied by both Divisional and County Boards.

With just one championship game yet to be decided, the U16A Hurling Final clash between Clonoulty/Rossmore and Cashel KC which was down for decision on Monday September 17 (full details next week).

The playing season is rapidly coming to a conclusion and will be wrapped up with the U16A Hurling League Final between Clonoulty/Rossmore and the Emly/Treacys combination plus U16B League decider between Galtee Rvs and the Kickhams, both of which will be fixed after completion of County U16 Semi Finals.
