Revealed: One Tipperary town's Main Street requires 'urgent attention'

Roscrea's Main Street requires 'urgent attention'

The surface of Roscrea's Main Street suffered during the winter

Roscrea's Main Street road surface has fallen into serious disrepair and local traders are criticising the lack of any repair job on the horizon.

Roscrea's new Town First Plan will see a comprehensive renewal of several streets in the town centre. However, that project is still in the fledgling stages and local representatives fear it is too long to wait for repairs needed immediately.

The rejuvenation of Market Square and the fresh road surface the project brought to a small portion of the street stands in stark contrast to the seriously dilapidated surface further along Main Street, where parking spaces and the centre line of the road present trip hazards for pedestrians.

The monthly meeting of the Municipal Council for the area heard the local business community are growing increasingly frustrated as the road surface in the commercial heart of the town further disintegrates and want something temporary “done urgently”.

Cllr Michael Smith (FF) told the meeting he is “pleading on behalf of the local business community” for repair works.
Director of Services, Eamonn Lonergan said the Main Street is classed as a regional road and thereby under the remit of the local authority.

“We will talk with the road department and examine if something can be done in the short-term”, Mr Lonergan said.
