Footpath requested for dangerous road in scenic area of south Tipperary

A footpath should be provided from Mountain View Estate in Marlfield, Clonmel to the crossroads at St Patrick’s Well, Marlfield, to cater for the large amount of people who walked this road for pleasure every day, District Mayor Pat English stated at a meeting of Clonmel Borough District.

He said that a lot of people used that loop as a walk but the road was dangerous for walkers and needed to be widened. It would be great if this could be sorted out, he stated.

He was supported in his request by Cllr Siobhán Ambrose.

In his report to the meeting, District Engineer Roger Noonan said that the LE288 road from St Patrick’s Well crossroads to the Mountain View estate was an average width of five metres.

Because of that, a 1.8 metres footpath couldn’t be accommodated without the acquisition of private property adjacent to the road.

The acquisition of this property, along with the scale of the proposed works, would lend this proposal to a capital works scheme.

As such, it is beyond the scope of Clonmel Borough District’s municipal works programme, the District Engineer stated.

Mr Noonan said he would liaise with his counterparts in the Active Travel Grants Programme and request that they would contact Cllr English.
