The road at Solohead cross on the way from Tipperary town to Limerick is currently closed due to a discovery made this morning.

A hand grenade - possibly from the War of Independence just over one hundred years ago - has been found near Solohead monument earlier today.

An ambush at Soloheadbeg took place on 21 January 1919, when members of the Irish Volunteers ambushed Royal Irish Constabulary (RIC) officers who were escorting a consignment of gelignite explosives at Soloheadbeg.

Construction work was taking place at the scene with the County Council doing repairs work in the area when the grim discovery was made this morning.

Currently the scene is closed and the bomb disposal unit is on the way from Cork to the scene. More updates to follow.
