Recently deceased Pogues frontman and legendary singer Shane MacGowan will be honoured with a special mural in Nenagh town, it was decided at the March meeting of Nenagh Municipal District Council.

Councillors in Nenagh agreed to fund the memorial at the junction of Emmet Place and Mitchell Street with €35,000 being set aside for the project.

Cllr Seamus Morris spoke about his delight that the legendary Irish folk singer was being remembered so well in the town since his sad passing late last year, and highlighted the success of the recent Pogues tribute concert in the Abbey Court Hotel in February.

“The concert was incredible and brought a huge crowd to the town,” Cllr Morris remarked, and he spoke about the importance of remembering MacGowan’s contribution to music and the effect he had on the town during his life.

District Administrator Rosemary Joyce responded to the calls from Cllr Morris by revealing that plans are in place for a mural to be commissioned in Emmet Place and Mitchell Street and she revealed that the Council has been working in conjunction with the MacGowan family with the project and they have given their full backing to the plans.

Along with the mural, there are also plans to have two pictures of the Shannon Rovers man hung in the Nenagh Tourist Office with the MacGowan family heavily involved in the process in terms of the mural and photos.

Cllr Joe Hannigan backed the plans and praised both Cllr Morris and the work of the Council around the project and their work in relation to the Pogues concert back in February.

District Administrator Rosemary Joyce also revealed further plans for another mural for the late Fr Alec Reid and noted that plans were in place to get this project in motion in the coming weeks and months.
