Conor McGregor has become the 21st election hopeful to contact Tipperary County Council expressing interest in securing the local authority's nomination to run in the upcoming race to succeed President Michael D. Higgins in Áras an Uachtaráin.

Tipperary County Council has confirmed it received a request from the former UFC champion this morning (Wednesday, September 10) seeking the Council's nomination.

Council Meetings Administrator Ger Walsh said Mr McGregor has been advised of the special meeting of Tipperary County Council at Nenagh Civic Offices at 10am next Tuesday, September 16 at which the Council will consider whether to nominate one of the 21 people who have sought the local authority's nomination to contest the presidential election.

Each of the presidential election hopefuls who have contacted the Council are being invited to make a presentation before the local authority's elected members at the special meeting.

The Council has requested Mr McGregor to confirm if he will attend the special council meeting and is awaiting his response.

Last week Mr McGregor posted a video on social media outside Government Buildings in Dublin calling for people to contact their councillors to ask them to support his presidential bid.

To get onto the ballot, Mr McGregor and all other independent presidential hopefuls must be either nominated by four local authorities or secure the backing of 20 members of the Oireachtas.

In July, the Court of Appeal dismissed an appeal brought by the former Mixed Martial Arts fights against a High Court civil jury verdict finding him liable for the sexual assault of Nikita Hand at a Dublin hotel in December 2018 and awarding her almost €250,000 in damages.
