For the sixth year running in 2016, Sport Ireland and Local Sports Partnerships teamed up once again with RTE’s Operation Transformation.
The Operation Transformation National Walks took place on Saturday, January 9 at 10.00am taking place in over 50 locations around Ireland.
This year, despite the cold weather, crowds turned up to walk in Clonmel, Cahir, Tipperary Town and Templemore.
The walks were a great success and enjoyed by all those who participated.
Valerie Connolly, Sports Co-ordinator with Tipperary Sports Partnership said it was great to see so many people of all ages enjoying the walks across the county. “I would just like to encourage everyone to make 2016 their year to be active”, she ssaid.
The Clonmel walk, officially started by Mayor Pat English, followed a route around Marlfield and returned to the Park Hotel for refreshments.
IHF walking leaders Ger Houlihan, Mary Flynn and Nicola Maunsell led the 440 walkers in Clonmel along the route. Lidl in Clonmel kindly sponsored refreshments for all the participants.
Cllr Andy Moloney launched the Cahir walk following a route from Duneske, onto the Clonmel Rd, Colaiste and Cahir Rd, The Square and returning to Duneske for refreshments. The 220 walker were led by IHF leaders Seamus Conway & Sheila Slattery.
Cllr Roger Kennedy, commenced the Tipperary Town walk starting from the Canon Hayes Sports Centre and followed a 5km route returning to the Canon Hayes Sports Centre for refreshments sponsored by Lidl, Tipperary Town.
This was the first year a walk was held in Tipperary Town as part of OT, a great turnout of 295 walkers completed the 5K led by Darren McGrath and Andrea O'Dwyer.
Cllr Jackie Cahill, officially got the Templemore Walk underway.
Tipperary Sports Partnership would like to especially thank Operation Transformation, Irish Heart Foundation, An Garda Siochana in Clonmel, Cahir, Templemore and Tipperary Town, Tipperary Civil Defence, Clonmel AC, Templemore AC, Duneske Sports Centre, Canon Hayes Sports Centre, Clonmel Park Hotel, Cahir Meet n Train, Downes Eurospar Templemore, Lidl in Clonmel and Tipperary Town and all volunteers and leaders for their assistance in facilitating and supporting the organisation of the event.
